Senators From North Carolina Are Celebrating The Senate Passing The Camp Lejeune Justice Act

Both US Senators from North Carolina, where Camp Lejeune is located, have championed providing veterans their day in court

Saturday, August 6, 2022 - North Carolina Senator Greg Murphy, speaking for his 89,000 North Carolina military veteran constituents, is celebrating the Camp Lejeune Justice Act that has been approved by the House and the Senate. The legislation was passed in a bipartisan vote of 85-15. The bill now awaits the signature of the President of the United States The Camp Lejeune Justice Act will provide Marines "long-overdue judicial relief to victims of water contamination at Camp Lejeune." according to the lawmaker. Murphy told his constituents that the bill will provide servicemembers, Marines, civil servants, contractors, and all of their family members that resided at one time on or near Camp Lejeune the right to file a Camp Lejeune lawsuit against the Federal government seeking lump-sum monetary compensation for their injuries. "When we send our men and women overseas, we make a promise to care for them when they come home,” said Rep. Greg Murphy (NC-03). “We failed our veterans when they were exposed to toxic drinking water at Camp Lejeune, and it is up to us to make it right." said the Senator.

Lawmakers from all fifty states agree that thservicemembers were let down when they returned home from the war in Afghanistan, Iraq, and elsewhere, only to out decades later that their cancer and other serious illness was caused by drinking the local tap water which was polluted. The military has known for decades that the local water system was being polluted by toxic chemicals as early as the 1950s and failed to warn the public or attempt to rectify the problem. Another of the bill's sponsors spoke out about the imminent passage of the bill. "After years of commitment to this issue, I am grateful that my colleagues on both sides of the aisle agreed to pass this crucial legislation so that poisoned Camp Lejeune veterans can finally seek justice,” said Rep. Matt Cartwright of Pennsylvania. North Carolina's representative David Price had this to say about the CLJA, "The federal government has a responsibility to care for our veterans, service members, and their families – but that’s not what happened at Camp Lejeune when thousands were exposed to contaminated tap water for decades. Those affected have suffered for far too long, and they deserve justice, including their day in court." Marines injured by drinking contaminated tap water are encouraged to file a Camp Lejeune Justice Act claim.

Camp Lejeune water has been contaminated with toxic chemicals for more than half a century and the Federal government failed to address the deadly problem. Marines who defeated the enemy overseas, returned home to find a more sinister enemy, carcinogenic PFAS forever chemicals, silently lurked in theirs and their family's drinking water. Not only have US marines been stricken with cancer over the last several decades, but also their spouses and children have suffered the effects. So many children have died from cancer in the Camp Lejeune area that the local cemetery has been called "baby heaven."
